Tonnerre was built from a positive mould completely out of prepreg carbon. When the
carbon was put in place on top of the mould the boat went into the oven. The ship was
warmed up in several stages, up to a temperature of 85ºC.
This was to activate
the resin in the carbon and to let flow out the resin and after the first process to
harden the carbon. The whole process was taking place in a vacuum .During the laminating the laminate was finished by using the "peel ply"
method. This nylon layer provides an even end result. After being tempered the layer is
pulled back off again. The texture that will stay behind is a perfect subsoil for
finishing off the hull.
The hull is a sandwich
construction which consists of several layer of bidirectional carbon with Santo
foam.
The hull is not of a uniform breadth. For
instance; the laminate is thicker
around the lifting keel to absorb the force created by the 3.4 m long keel.
